James R. Osgood was a native of Maine who went to work for the publishing house of Ticknor and Fields. He eventually founded the subsidiary group James R. William Wetmore Story was born in Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1840, left the United States in 1847 and spent the rest of his life in Rome.
